12 gauge round ball .690

12 gauge round ball .690 load data

The round ball is still one of the best short to medium range slugs available today.  The simple round ball slug is just the same as the musket balls of old.  These balls have proven to be reliable and devastating for shorter range shooting in close cover, and weighing close to 1 1/8 oz they deliver more than enough energy to deal with most targets.

The most popular size among slug shooters is the .690 single ball.  Smaller sizes such as .645 and .600 are also extremely popular with the added advantage of fitting nicely into standard plastic trap wads.

Rolled turn-over closures prove to be the best method of crimping these loadings, giving even powder burn and consistent accuracy.  The addition of a overshot card may be necessary with the smaller size balls and the frangible disc type card which shatters on firing is ideal for this purpose.
